History
The Romance sans paroles for cello and piano, discovered among the composer’s possessions after his death and not published until 1868, by Julius Rietz, as Op.109. It is dedicated to the French cellist Lise Cristiani, with whom Mendelssohn became acquainted when she gave some
successful concerts in Leipzig in 1845, and who was in all probability the first famous female cello virtuoso. Mendelssohn completed the work in 1847; it consists of expressive D major Andante passages surrounding a D minor agitato section. Mendelssohn’s only ‘song without words’ not only includes the cello but also confers the ‘vocal line’ on it almost throughout – arguably one of the finest conceivable tributes to this chamber music partnership

Mendelssohn was apparently pleased with her playing: he later dedicated to her his Romance sans paroles op. 109 no. 38. Cristiani enjoyed a brilliant but short career, during which she traveled extensively.

Two short original works for cello and piano are recorded here that were not regarded as worthy of publication by the highly self-critical composer. They were both written for colleagues who played the cello. The brief Assai tranquilo in B minor in the style of a "song without words", ending on a half-close in F sharp major, was written on 25 July 1835 in the album of Mendelssohn's friend the composer, conductor and cellist Julius Rietz (1812-77).

Mendelssohn actually wrote the title of the song in English, Romance sans paroles, which translates to romance without words. But Mendelssohn finally changed his name to Lieder ohne Worte from the language he used for tea and coffee. Management of processes and publications
